About IDOC

IDOC History

In 1999 a small group of local Connecticut independent optometrists started meeting together as a study group. At first, they focused on ways to better understand and respond to the changes in managed care and the impact it was having on their business. Slowly, the group grew and so did the topics they discussed. They had healthy and lively conversations and debates about the best way to schedule patients, how to use billing codes properly, the benefits and need for new and costly ophthalmic equipment, how to improve their overall practice productivity, as well as other interesting topics. They realized that collectively, as they shared experiences about their practice and patient care, they would individually become more knowledgeable and prepared to meet the ongoing challenges facing the optometric industry. They also recognized that in order to become more successful as independent optometrists, they needed to band together more formally, specifically in the areas of group purchasing, practice management and continuing education. This was the beginning of IDOC.
